Martha Sue Morris age 92, of Pearson, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2021, surrounded by her family, in the home where she had lived for the last 64 years.
Sue was born in November of 1928, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Peterson. Her family, which included the Summerlin’s and Kirkland’s, one of the oldest in Atkinson County. Through out her life, she enjoyed many things, traveling, cooking, decorating for the holidays, fishing and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a longtime member of Sweetwater United Methodist Church.
In the fall of 1946, while chaperoning a high school trip, she met the love of her life, Ellie Morris. He had just returned home from his Army service in WWII, and they married the next year. Together, they raised two children, Deborah and Terry, but over the next 74 years they touched the lives of nearly every person in Pearson.
They owned several businesses, including a hardware store on Main Street and Ellie would go on to serve several terms as Mayor of the city from the 1990’s until 2013. Whether at home, the store or City Hall, Sue was a true partner.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Sue Morris could do almost anything: from making a dress or baking a birthday cake, to servicing a well pump or working at the drug store. She could fry chicken as good as she could put a roof on the chicken house.
If it needed to be done, she would do it. Sometimes, even if it didn’t need to be done, she would do it anyway.
If you were lucky enough to be her friend, you had someone you could count on. If you loved a bluegrass music festival, you had someone to go with and if you were family, you had someone who loved you unconditionally.
She is survived by her husband, Ellie Morris, son, Terry Morris and wife Linda, daughter, Deborah Muth and husband, Fred, sister, Betty Peterson Chaplin and sister-in-law, Jean Peterson, who still lives in the house that Sue was born and raised in. Four grandchildren, Michael Roberts and wife Morgan, Amy Morris and husband Jason, Amanda Morris and Brandon Morris and wife Amber. Fourteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
