Catherine Carter Tanner

Catherine Carter Tanner, age 91, departed this life on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at her home. Catherine was a lifelong resident of Atkinson County, Ga. She attended grammar school and graduated from Pearson High School as Valedictorian of her class in 1951.

Catherine held positions in the Atkinson County Extension Agency and the Atkinson County Health Department from which she retired on February 28, 1985.

Catherine was a farmer’s wife. She worked alongside Buddy growing and harvesting crops and helping in the poultry business, as well as working a 5-day weekly office job. Apart from her busy schedule in the public, she pastored Elbethel Church for several years between pastors.

Catherine was very talented. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, tatting and sewing. In her later years she became an artist, painting many, many beautiful pictures.

Catherine is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Robert L. “Buddy” Tanner, her parents, Milton and Ferrell Carter, sisters, Maxine Baskin, Estelle Davis, and Eunice Carter, brothers, Everett Carter, Freddie Carter, H.M. Carter, Grady Carter, and Eddie Carter, and numerous nieces. She is survived by two sisters, Juanita Carter Steese (Larry) and Geraldine Carter Spradley (Benny), and multiple nieces and nephews. The family is very grateful to her beloved caregiver, Willie Mae Griner.

Funeral services for Ms. Tanner were held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at 2:00 P.M at Elbethel Church in Pearson, Ga. with Bro. Roger Baskin and Rev. Daniel Lastinger officiating. Special congregational hymns included “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” and “It Is Well with My Soul” lead by Bro. Roger Baskin accompanied by pianist Dorothy Baskin. The interment followed in Sweetwater Cemetery.

Serving as active pallbearers were: Corey Hayes, Steven Tanner, Ricky Newmans, Steven Johnson, James Gore, Jr., and Mike Murray.

Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, Ga. was in charge of the arrangements.
