Mrs. Laverne Giddens age 72 of Pearson, GA. passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at her home in Pearson, GA. following an extended illness. A native of Atkinson County, Mrs. Giddens was born November 5, 1941 daughter of Grady B. and Mary Effie White Sirmans. She attended Ben Hill Technical School and received her degree in Cosmetology. She later opened her shop "The Haircut Place" in Pearson and worked for many years as a stylist and beautician. After retiring as a beautician she worked s as secretary for Relihan Funeral Home and also worked as a substitute clerk for the City of Pearson. Her last employment was as Librarian for Satilla Regional Library Pearson Branch. She served on the Pearson Housing Authority and the Atkinson County Board of Health. She was a member of the DAR and served as the Queen Mother for the Atkinson County Red Hat Society. She was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include: Husband: William Earl Giddens of Pearson, GA. 1 Son: Jerome Roberts and wife Nan of Tifton, GA. 1 Daughter: Marsha Roepe and husband Ed of Dunwoody, GA. 2 Step-Daughters: Gladieth Nugent of Pearson, GA. Patricia Wright of Covington, GA. 4 Brothers: Edward Sirmans and wife Georgia Ann of Augusta, GA. Wayne Sirmans and wife Diane of Douglas, GA. Donald Sirmans and wife Maliea of Jesup, GA. Roy Sirmans and wife Lisa of Dublin, GA. 3 Sisters: Evelyn Folsom and husband David of Douglas, GA. Anna Strickland and husband John of Moultrie, GA. Janice Corbitt and friend Jerry Nettles of Pearson, GA. 10 Grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildren, and several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Giddens were held at 2:00 P. M. Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Chaney officiating. Special musical selections "I'm Not Afraid" and "I Can't Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand" were rendered by Glenda Lang and John Lang with John Lang accompanying at the piano. Soft music for the Prelude and the Postlude was played by John Lang pianist. The interment followed in Antioch Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were: Anthony Folsom, Wesley Corbitt, Zane Nugent, Jordan Roberts, Nelson Corbitt, Brent Roepe, Levi Sirmans and Bucky Akins. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Red Hat Society. Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, Ga. was in charge of the arrangements.
