Gertrude Presley James

Mrs. Gertrude Presley James, age 95 of Axson, Ga. passed away Thursday, August 06, 2015 at Satilla Care Center in Waycross, Ga. following an extended illness. A native of Appling County, Mrs. James was born May l9, l920, daughter of Newton and Artie Adeline Frisbee Presley. She had made her home in Axson, Ga. for most of his life. During her working years she was assistant postmaster at the Axson Post Office and also served as a substitute teacher, mostly on the high school level. In addition to raising a family she also helped her husband with the farm. She loved to work in her yard and at the age of 94 if you rode by her house you would see her working in her flower gardens. She had been a faithful member of Union Hill Church since l942 (73 years) where she taught Sunday school for many years and also served on the Board of Trustees. She also served as Chairman of the Union Hill Cemetery Trustee Board for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow James, a son Lynard Wayne James and a daughter, Pamela Joyce (Pam) James Witherspoon. Survivors include: 2 Sons: Boyd James and wife Peggy of Axson, Ga. Jerry James and wife Linda of Moultrie, Ga. Daughter: Paula McMullan and husband Mike of Forsyth, Ga. Daughter-in-law: Elaine James of Jacksonville, Fl. Son-In-Law: Mike Witherspoon of Axson, Ga. 9 Grandchildren, 9 Great-Grandchildren, 4 Great-Great Grandchildren and several Nieces, Nephews, and other relatives also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. James were held Monday, August 10, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Union Hill Congregational Christian Church with Rev. Gene Hughes officiating. The Eulogy was given by her grandson Ken James. Special music included "Whispering Hope" rendered by the congregation with Rebecca Andrews accompanying at the piano. Soft music for the Prelude and the Postlude was by Rebecca Andrews, pianist. The interment followed in Union Hill Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were grandchildren: Kevin James, Ken James, Thomas James, Benjamin McMullan, Mark McMullan, Joel Witherspoon, and Seth Witherspoon. Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Bruce Corbitt, Ricky Bullard, and Roger Smith. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to Union Hill Church or Union Hill Cemetery Fund (C/O. Peggy James 240 Woodrow Ln. Axson, Ga. 31624) or charity of choice.
