Mr. Donald “Don” Gurley, age 56 of Pearson, Ga. passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Satilla Hospice House in Waycross, Ga. following an extended illness. Born January 5, l961, Mr. Gurley was the son of Curtis and Betty Simmons Gurley. He had made his home in Millwood for many years before moving to Pearson 15 years ago. He was production manager at Fleetwood for many years and later worked at C.T. Transportation as a truck driver before poor health forced him to retire. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends and especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed woodworking, fishing, music and was an avid Georgia Football fan. He was a member of New Harmony Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include: Wife: Wendy James Gurley of Pearson, Ga. Parents: Curtis and Betty Simmons Gurley of Millwood, Ga. 2 Sons: Matt Gurley and wife Michelle of Pearson, Ga. Jarrett Gurley of Alma, Ga. 3 Step-Sons: Jared James of Pearson, Ga. Kinnon Holt and wife Sara of Va. Devin Taft of Pearson, Ga. Daughter: Kortney Gurley of Pearson, Ga. Step-Daughter: Whitney Taft Lopez and husband Rene of Pearson, Ga. 4 Sisters: Brenda Mizell and husband Lee of Axson, Ga. Linda O’Berry and husband Rondal of Millwood, Ga. Tina Thompson and husband Perry of Millwood, Ga. Nelda Beverly and fiancé Rufus Douglas of Millwood, Ga. 6 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive. Funeral Services for Mr. Gurley were held Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at New Harmony Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Jamey Smith and Rev. Clayton Davis officiating. Special music included “Supper Time” rendered acapella by Regina Davis and Candie Thrift and “Serenaded by Angels” and “Lead Me Home” rendered by Michael Johnson (Keyboards). Soft music for the prelude and postlude was played by Michael Johnson on the keyboards. The interment followed in New Harmony Grove Church Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were Johnny Davis, Brandon Mizell, Ian Mizell, Benjy O’berry, Kevin Davis, and Ryan Thompson. Honorary pallbearers were: Ricky McDowell, Dennis McDowell, Glenn McDowell, Carl Bennett, Stanley Bennett and Johnny “Bossman” Davis. The family encourages memorials be made to the Atkinson County Cancer Crusade. Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, Ga. was in charge of the arrangements.
