Mr. James Carter “Jimmy” Summerlin, age 61 of Hazlehurst, Ga. (formerly of Pearson, Ga.) passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Specialty Hospital in Jacksonville, Fl. following an extended illness. Born October 03, 1956 in Homerville, Ga. Mr. Summerlin was the son of Carter Summerlin and NanJo Corbitt Coleman. He had his Doctorate of Divinity and had been a Chaplin for the navy before he was discharged due to disability. He and his wife, Sarah lived in Norfolk, VA for several years before moving to Pearson in 2000. After her death, his chronic illness forced his move to Hazlehurst. Jimmy had a photographic memory, a magnificent singing voice, loved to study the Bible, and had a gift for delivering a sermon. Mr. Summerlin is preceded in death by his father Carter Summerlin. Survivors include: Mother: NanJo Corbitt Coleman of Maumelle, Ar. Brother: Paul Corbitt of Little Rock, Ar. Sister: Lynn Summerlin Bullard and husband Tony of Maumelle, Ar. Several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made to the preservation of Atkinson Counties Historic Salem Church.
